Prelude.

H
ello, dear Reader, and welcome to my Blog. Here is what I plucked from the fruits of well over sixty years of freelance writing, most of them in Denmark. Do jump around in these pages, sampling pieces with topics and titles that ring your bell.

This blog’s title starts with a “But” for good reason. You’ll find that in the first article and departure platform. “But Denmark Is My Home” ran in The Scandinavian Review, a journal of Nordic pursuits published without a break since 1913 by The American-Scandinavian Foundation in New York City. I lived on one-block-long Cornelia Street in west Greenwich Village, and putted in and out of town on a motor scooter. Both before and a few months after marrying a beautiful and bright Danish blond. I met Bodil Hansen in Copenhagen in 1959, and we ended up moving to her homeland. My idea, not hers. I wanted to freelance.

The blog’s parts cover my major interests: Music. Scooting & Running. Narration. Culture & Environment. Medicine & Science. Family & Personal. My favorite assignment took me to the world’s northernmost populated year-round outpost, Station Nord, in arctic Greenland. There I covered Denmark’s dogsled Patrol Sirius for the international editions of Reader’s Digest. First time on a dogsled, the huskies took off with me aboard — before the driver reached the sled. Everybody else laughed. What difference did it make where we stopped? they asked. Not waiting to find out, I rolled off into the snow.

So much good stuff to come!

  2. Frad,
You've been a valued mentor and my Jersey Jazz editor from afar. Even though we have not physically met, I feel as if we have. I've read your book, Harlem Jazz Adventures, with great pleasure; you nurtured mine. Now I look forward to learning more about your eventful, joyful life.
